They're Applying across America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his designs for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.

He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and this week a study predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – truly, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the president try to upend the established notion of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of a mighty king emerging; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for other people, particularly for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his method regarding offenses is that if an individual takes your outer garment you should give them your pullover also.

The apparent and direct fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a form of profound affection centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Highest of Us

Hence I have become heartened to witness the persistent defiance to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the best parts within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and welcome him or not?

The nation is most protected, essentially, through connection to the finest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by reference to what makes it distinctive and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In neither case does it imply feigning the most negative about the nation and religious tradition did not happen; it means both modesty and belief, a combination that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
