Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
