European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
