Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of his move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
