The UK and US have finalized a landmark bilateral deal that will keep zero duties on British drug exports going into the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has agreed to raise funding on drugs through the public health system. This move guarantees that tariffs on these crucial goods will be held at nothing for a timeframe of three years.

This development is in response to earlier statements to significantly raise tariffs on patented drug imports, with figures floated reaching double the cost.

"This deal between the UK strengthens the global environment for cutting-edge drugs and establishes much-needed fairness to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," a statement noted.

Commercial Importance

Medicines are one of the the United Kingdom's most significant exports to the America, which is easily the largest destination for leading British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data show that in the year leading up to last September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure made up a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This guarantee safeguards work, increases investment and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a worldwide center for biotech and pharma," a minister stated.

Key British Pledges

The pact includes several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the cost ceiling at which it considers new treatments to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a aim to double overall NHS spending on drugs from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage manufacturers must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be capped at fifteen percent. In the past, rebates exceeded 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact comes amid a ongoing dispute between the sector and the UK government over spending levels and approval rates.

The disagreement were heightened by assertions that US customers were paying several times more for the same drugs than people in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been directed toward American operations.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a proportion of its resources over the previous ten-year period.
